Year 2 NM/PL 2021 - 2022

Welcome to Emerald class

Welcome to Year 2’s class page where you can find out about all the exciting things we get up to….

Our termly newsletter has lots of important information for parents and is available for you to download here,  alongside other important information about our learning and any significant events as we move through the year.

This term's topic is Escape to the Capital!

This is an exciting topic in which we create links between many different subjects. We will introduce this topic using the text, The Naughty Bus. Our Geography work will begin by finding out about our school. Your child will use fieldwork skills to study the geography of our school building and its grounds. We will use aerial photographs to recognise landmarks and features before creating simple maps. Following this, we will look at the map of the UK to identify and name the four countries and their capital cities. Using beautiful books we will look at the characteristics of England focusing on London. In English, the children will take the role of various characters from these stories to write letters, diary entries and character descriptions. The children will also create non-chronological reports about London as well as writing an invitation for tea from the Queen! Once the children are familiar with London, they will become historians and investigate why The Great Fire of London spread so quickly. We are excited to be able to enrich this learning with a trip out of school.

In Science, we will name the parts of our bodies and see how our senses enable us to find out about the world around us before taking part in a whole school focus, looking at the importance of exercise and eating the right amounts of different types of food.

As well as being introduced to coding in ICT, we will use the internet to research and explore how to make a moving picture. Our DT work will link directly to this as we will investigate levers and sliders to design and make our own moving picture.

In music we will develop our listening sills, explore sounds before experimenting with untuned instruments to accompany a song. As artists we will develop techniques in using colour, pattern, shape and texture. We will research the life and work of abstract artists and investigate mixing colours. In RE we will look again at the creation story and use the story to begin to describe what some Christians believe God is like. During the second part of the term, we will look at the Christmas story and the gifts given to Jesus when he was born. We will join with the rest of the school to work through PSHE themes within the classroom and through assemblies. We will begin with the unit titled, Getting to know you.

Class Dojo

We use class dojo as a way to reward the children and to communicate with parents. You will also get any relevant updates on here too.

General Reminders

PE

The children have two PE lessons each week - these are on a Monday and Thursday and children need to come to school in their PE kit.

Please ensure all items of clothing brought in to school are clearly named.

Homework

We ask that you hear your child read as regularly as possible as well as reading to them. In addition to reading at home we will send home homework tasks. Each week your child will receive a comprehension task, five spellings and a maths game through the app, Mathletics. We appreciate your continued support in assisting your child to complete each task.

Here's to a great year!
