Absolutely true! Set up to mirror the format of the current European Tournament taking place in France, it was a hotly contested event yesterday. Boys from Years 5 & 6 travelled to Burslem to compete in an all-day ‘European’ football tournament with 13 other schools. Our school was chosen to represent ‘Turk ey.’
The team played fantastically well in the group stages, not losing any of the six games and by lunchtime, had finished top of the group, scoring 19 goals and conceding only 2. The team won their quarter final comfortably against ‘Russia,’ as the teamwork and skill really came together. It was a tense semi-final, against ‘England’ who were very good opposition. It was a hard fought game but the goals came and the team was successful.
The final was against ‘Germany’ and at full time, after we created several good chances; the score was 0-0. There was a penalty shoot-out to decide the winners. You can imagine the excitement and tension. Turkey (Lower Park) scored all five penalties, finding the corners of each goal so well. But it was a fine save by our goalkeeper, Sam G, that made the difference and meant that Lower Park are ‘truly European Champions’ with a magnificent large trophy to bring back from Staffordshire.
