PSHE Curriculum
PSHE and RSE at Lower Park School
As you may know, from EYFS to Y6, we base all of our Personal, Social, Health Education lessons (PSHE) on an excellent resource, which is called ‘1 Decision’.
The ‘1 Decision’ resource supports the teaching of PSHE in Early Years, Key Stages 1 and 2 and assures coverage of the statutory teaching guidance from the Department for Education for Health Education and Relationship Education in primary schools. We work hard in school to ensure that all PSHE lessons directly meet the needs and wishes of our children, so we use the resource as a basis for our lessons, but we do not always teach the suggested lessons in isolation or order; our Science and Religious Education lessons often complement our PSHE lessons. This guidance has been compulsory in all primary schools since September 2020.
In delivering PSHE, we cover a variety of topics, from staying safe, staying healthy, being responsible, relationships, managing feelings and emotions, and more. The modules are designed to complement each other and build children’s understanding in an age-appropriate way.
Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education
At Lower Park School, our PSHE curriculum strives to give pupils the knowledge, skills, and attributes that they need to keep themselves healthy and safe and to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. It brings together healthy relationships, social responsibility and personal well-being, whilst promoting fundamental British values. Our Lower Park values align with these.
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Our PSHE curriculum covers all of the statutory requirements for RSE within each year group. Effective Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) is crucial to developing and maintaining emotional and physical health. Our curriculum is designed to ensure pupils receive their sex education in the wider context of relationships, and are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. We also support the children to develop a range of appropriate personal skills to keep themselves healthy and safe, particularly within different relationships.
Throughout their time at Lower Park, the children spend time developing an understanding of a range of values and moral issues including the importance of family life. In Science, Children are taught biological facts related to human growth and development, including reproduction and the importance of healthy relationships. We believe that the teaching of sex education should be complementary and supportive to the role of parents.
There are several lessons designed to cover this content, scheduled throughout the curriculum. Example lesson content for key RSE topics are included below. Lessons may be adapted to ensure the appropriate delivery to the class. Teachers will also inform you ahead of these lessons so that you can be prepared for the conversations that these lessons may instigate. You can also visit the 1decision website at 1decision Parent Zone where you can view the videos about this content.
