The Big Dig
Lesson: English
Class: Year 3/4 Year: 2017 - 2018
Braving the weather we went out to do our archaeological 'Big dig' after learning the unbelievable news that the Reception playground was built on a what was once the Roman Fort of Poyntonium!
We spotted an interesting location and used our trowels, brushes and magnifying glasses to carefully remove the top layer of soil and search for objects. Luckily we didn't have to wait long until we made our first discovery! This was quickly followed by several other amazing artefacts being unearthed - Roman coins, jewellery, a comb and even a skeletons lower leg!
Obviously after being in the ground for so long some of the objects had been damaged and broken but fortunately our excavation experts were up to the challenge of piecing together these fragments of History before measuring, recording and researching what the previous possible uses could have been.
We will now be writing reports and recounts to describe what happened after such an amazing day!
